The outside temperatures are reaching freezing point these days. As a result, the temperature in the living rooms will also drop, resulting in cold (living) rooms. Due to the high energy prices, many households – particularly low and middle-income ones – do not dare to turn on the heating at home. These signals have reached everyone in recent weeks. Research agency Ipsos indicates that 47 percent of households are turning down their heating at home to save on the high costs. This research confirms the signals. At our Energy Point, located in Rotterdam West, we have been hearing many poignant stories from residents for quite some time. This causes us concern. It is always sad to hear that households do not dare to turn on the room lighting, live in a room temperature between 5 and 15 degrees, and/or do not dare to use the hot water. The cold brings not only physical complaints but also mental problems.
In many cases, it is unnecessary for households to have to get through this cold period. Neighbours, housing associations, and local authorities can all alleviate the hardship for this.
